Human Rights in Action

Human Rights are the Law

At BIHR we believe the potential of the  Human Rights Act (HRA) , to enable people to flourish across all aspects of their lives, has not yet been realised. We are committed to enabling people to make the best use of their protections and the duties of public officials under the Human Rights Act, using this legal framework to create social change beyond the courtrooms.

Human rights are more than just a list of values or an example of best practice. They are not gifts from government or rewards you can earn. Human rights are the law, they are the rule book on how states should treat individuals. Public services have a legal duty to respect, protect and fulfil people’s human rights in their work, from day to day service delivery to policies and decision-making.

Human Rights as a tool for change

Through our work at BIHR, we know that organisations work better when they use a human rights based approach, staff have an effective decision making framework and those that use the service are empowered to know and use their rights. If you want to create change in your organisation we can work with you to create a bespoke plan for change, embedding a human rights based approach in your organisation. Helping your organisation respect and protect human rights, a legal duty which is set out in the Human Rights Act. Read more here.
