Human Rights Day 2025
Every year at BIHR, we celebrate Human Rights Day which falls on 10th December, recognising the anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. In 2025, we’re also marking a couple of other anniversaries: 75 years of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and 25 years since our Human Rights Act (HRA) came into force, bringing legal human rights protects into UK law.
This year, we’re not just celebrating the anniversaries – we’re celebrating the people and communities whose lives have been shaped by these laws. Many people feel increasingly uncertain about the future in 2025, but we’re sharing a hopeful vision for human rights in the UK, calling for action and solidarity to make this vision a reality.

Open Letter to the Prime Minister
On this 75th anniversary of the ECHR, we've joined together with over 180 organisations to write to the Prime Minister and political leaders, urging them to match our human rights protections with strong political leadership and a clear commitment to putting them into practice.
The letter is available in Easy Read and video format, with thanks to BIHR's community partners.
Civil Society Gathering
To mark Human Rights Day 2025, BIHR is hosting a gathering in London, with civil society organisations from across the UK. The event is an opportunity to come together to positively and proactively champion human rights, featuring a range of speakers:
- Political and policy positions from the UK Government
- Legal insights from Leigh Day Solicitors
- Research findings from the Bonavero Institute
- Perspectives from devolved nations
- Community voices: youth, mental health, migration, recovery...
We're also launching BIHR's exciting new ECHR zine at the event, which is full of real stories, creative reflections, and powerful messages about what human rights mean in everyday life.
