ECHR at 75: Stories of Hope and Human Rights for Everyone

This year marks two big milestones in the story of human rights in the UK: 75 years since the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) was created, and 25 years since the Human Rights Act (HRA) brought those rights home.

At BIHR, we’re celebrating not just the anniversaries, but the people and communities whose lives have been shaped by these laws.

Our new ECHR Zine is full of real stories, creative reflections, and powerful messages about what human rights mean in everyday life. It’s a hopeful, positive look at how the ECHR and HRA continue to make a difference today.

What's inside

Our ECHR Zine brings together a wide range of voices - from community leaders and campaigners to lawyers and young people - all sharing stories that show how human rights belong to us all.

Inside you’ll find:

  •  Real stories of impact and change across the UK.
  • Reflections from legal experts showing the positive reach of human rights beyond the courts.
  • Contributions from civil society and community groups united by a belief in fairness and dignity.
  • Creative pieces that make human rights accessible, engaging, and inspiring.

Why it Matters

The ECHR was created in the aftermath of World War II as a promise: that everyone deserves dignity, fairness, and respect.

Seventy-five years later, that promise still matters.

In a time when the value of human rights is often debated, we believe in telling the stories that remind us what’s at stake — and what’s possible.

The ECHR Zine is about looking forward, not back. It celebrates the positive difference human rights make every day and invites us all to keep that hope alive.

Who it’s For

This Zine is for everyone who believes in fairness, dignity, and respect - whether you work in human rights or are just curious to learn more.

  • Civil society organisations can use these stories to inspire their work.
  • Political audiences will find accessible examples of the ECHR and HRA in action.
  • Legal professionals can connect legal principles with real-world impact.
  • Funders and supporters can see why human rights work needs sustained investment.

Everyone can discover what the law really means for people, not in theory, but in life.
