Taster Session: Housing and Human Rights

Human Rights in the Housing Sector – Free Online Taster Session Thursday 20 November from 2.00pm – 3.00pm

Ahead of our February 2026 course on Housing and Human Rights this free taster session will:

  • Give an overview of the Human Rights Act and how it is relevant to social housing.
  • Share stories of human rights change in social housing settings.
  • Provide an insight on using the Human Rights Act in social housing settings from the Housing Ombudsman Service.
  • Share information about our 2026 Housing and Human Rights training course, how organisations can apply, and answer any questions.

Registrations for the free taster session close at 5pm on Tuesday 18th November 2025.

At BIHR, we would like to do more to support public authorities and charities operating in the housing sector to take a human rights-based approach in their work, from public authorities considering the impact of their decisions on our human rights, to charities using the legal language of human rights to challenge decisions that are not rights respecting. As part of this, we will be hosting a free online taster session on housing and human rights to coincide with the launch of the Housing Ombudsman’s human rights guidance.

In this session, you can hear more about the human rights legal framework under the Human Rights Act, and how it is relevant to the housing sector. We will also be joined by a representative from the Housing Ombudsman Service who will be sharing their human rights guidance, as well as their experiences with using human rights in the service. We will end by sharing our open course on human rights and housing that will be commencing in 2026.

Please note that the course and this taster session is aimed at professionals working in the social housing sector, including local authorities, social housing landlords and housing associations. It is also open to those working in the charity and voluntary sector where your organisational aims are focused on social housing.

Registrations for our free taster session on Housing and Human Rights are now closed. Please keep an eye on our website and social media pages for future sessions.
