BIHR is delighted to announce that we have received a Community Engagement Award at Queen Mary University’s 2018 Community Engagement Awards for our work with Tower Hamlets Recovery College (THRC), part of East London NHS Foundation Trust.

The Community Engagement Awards celebrate Queen Mary University’s connections to its local community and wider society, recognising the partnerships and collaborations in Queen Mary's research, teaching and wider work which bring benefit to local residents, wider communities, Queen Mary's academics, researchers and students.

BIHR worked with THRC to co-produce and deliver 2 community open learning sessions on Mental Health, Mental Capacity and Human Rights. These sessions were open to anyone living or working in Tower Hamlets with an interest in mental health, mental capacity and/or human rights, and were created and delivered in partnership with THRC, providing legal expertise alongside people with lived experience. This partnership directly contributed to the success of the workshops, enabling attendance from a diverse group of service users, carers and friends, and practitioners working in the health and care sector.  Participants were given the space to talk about their own experiences and listen and learn from others experiences, which made sessions more engaging and impactful, while also demonstrating the importance of our human rights laws.

This project provided a great opportunity to connect us with the local community and to share public legal education on human rights that is practical and supports people to both understand and benefit from their rights.  The sessions empowered participants to use human rights language confidently going forward, with 100% of community members who attended the workshops reporting that their knowledge of human rights had improved, and 92% reporting that they felt more able to raise a human rights issue upon completion of the workshops.

We would like to express our thanks to Tower Hamlets Recovery College for their participation in this very worthwhile project.
