Teaching Citizenship Through Human Rights - Teacher Training Events

To celebrate the launch of the new Key Stage 3 Teaching Resource, Right Here, Right Now: Teaching citizenship through human rights, a series of free regional teacher training events were held throughout June 2008 in Bristol, London, Coventry, Newcastle and Leeds. The one-day training events aimed to:

  • introduce participants to human rights, focusing on two key human rights frameworks; the Human Rights Act and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child
  • enable participants to feel confident in delivering lessons about human rights
  • introduce participants to a human rights approach to teaching and learning which will support their teaching of Citizenship as a whole
  • explore practical tips and strategies for delivering Citizenship through human rights education, using activities and ideas from the new KS3 human rights resource pack, and other relevant resources.

The events were a great success, with over 160 teachers and supporters of citizenship education attending. We were very fortunate to have Chris Waller, Audrey Osler and Hugh Starkey as keynote speakers at the various events, which gave participants an inspiring start to the day. Participants fed back that they found them both informative, useful and also good fun!

Details of future training events will be posted here.
