BIHR Projects - Putting Human Rights into Practice

A key part of BIHR's mission is to support the development and use of human rights in practice - ensuring that human rights principles, legislation and policy commitments make the move from rhetoric to reality. One of the main ways we take this forward is through leading or partnering on strategic pilot or demonstration projects that aim to test and develop human rights based approaches in particular areas such as strengthening the voices of people experiencing poverty or better quality health and social care. There is no one single human rights based approach but in essence it is the process by which human rights principles and standards are put into practice or made real in people's lives.

As well as working with people on the frontline of the public and the voluntary and community sector, all of our project work is designed to draw out wider practice and policy learning. A number of our current projects also have significant human awareness raising and capacity building elements to them.

Work on developing human rights based approaches in practice is still relatively new within the UK and BIHR firmly believes that this should move forward via collaboration between those with human rights knowledge and skills, and those with knowledge and expertise in particular sectors or on particular issues. For these reason all of projects in which we are currently involved are being developed and delivered in collaboration with others.
