“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.” Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 25.1 |

Voluntary sector organisations are increasingly playing an important role in health and social care – both as providers of services, and as advocates and campaigners on behalf of those in need of better care. Most are working on 'human rights issues', but relatively few are using human rights as a mechanism to support their work.
We have been funded by the Department of Health since 2010 to explore ways of assisting voluntary sector organisations working on health and social care to use human rights to provide and advocate for better services.
We have worked closely with over 20 organisations in Birmingham, Liverpool and London since July 2011. In the final year of the project we shall involve other organisations or stakeholders through a series of open courses and round table meetings.
There is a resources section on our Community website with further information about the project (the site is currently in the process of redevelopment).
Please contact Helen Wildbore if you would like more information about this work.
