Human Rights and Bunting!

On Monday 30th July, BIHR and Songololo Feet delivered a Human Rights and Bunting workshop at Praxis Community Centre in Bethnal Green, as part of our Human Rights in the Community Project. The event was attended by asylum seekers and refugees from a diverse range of countries - including Eritrea, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Iran.

The group looked at the ideas and history of human rights and discussed the values at their core - and then used the ideas to create individual elements in a length of human rights themed bunting. Artists and non-artists chose words words or illustrations to represent the essence and strength of human rights as they saw them. Freedom, Family, Love, and Equality were common themes.

The result of the day's work was a beautiful array of bunting that reflected key human rights ideals: the start of what we hope will become the longest and best-travelled piece of human rights bunting. The strands will be put together in Brighton, Manchester, Truro, Belfast, Inverness, Bangor, Leicester, Ipswich, Preston, Boston, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bournemouth, Sunderland and York. They will cross the length and breadth of the UK, and then return to London - where we shall display them prominently!
