BIHR is thrilled to announce our director, Katie Ghose, has been awarded the title of ‘Pro Bono/Human Rights Lawyer 2010’ by the Society of Asian Lawyers. The award recognises Katie's contribution to the field of human rights and not-for-profit legal action throughout her career. This includes working for leading national charities such as Age UK, Citizens Advice and now BIHR, and a long-standing commitment to refugee issues, most recently as a Commissioner on the Independent Asylum Commission.
Sundeep Bhatia of the Society of Asian Lawyers said, 'The Society of Asian Lawyers is delighted to make barrister Katie Ghose their Pro Bono/Human Rights Lawyer of the year. We want to recognise in particular her work as Director of the British Institute of Human Rights, a charity which translates legal decisions about human rights into practical guidance for people and public services to use in everyday life.'
Katie is thrilled to accept this award and would like to thank the Society of Asian Lawyers for acknowledging the impact that BIHR has made in our 40th anniversary year, in bringing human rights to life. She said, 'Amidst politically uncertain times and with spending cuts afoot, BIHR is working hard to ensure human rights are used to protect the most vulnerable from savage cuts. The new government is promising to rebuild relations between people and the state. We hope to see the political heat taken out of human rights and recognition for the quiet way in which the Human Rights Act is already helping to restore power to the people.'
