BIHR is supporting a proposal to make a small amendment to the Health and Social Care Bill which will have a huge impact on the protection of people's rights. The Bill starts its next stage of discussion in the House of Lords on 8 February 2012.
BIHR is calling on parliamentarians to support an amendment which will clarify that the Human Rights Act does apply to publicly-funded health and social care services that are delivered by private companies and voluntary bodies.
We think all older people and disabled people who are entitled to receive these services should be safe in the knowledge that they will be treated with dignity and respect and if things go wrong they can hold services to account. We don't think that access to basic human rights should depend on whether your local authority delivers these services directly or if they choose to commission...
