Human Rights and Health and Social Care

22 September 2010 - 10:00am
'Human rights have a very real place in the consideration and delivery of care to vulnerable people such as those with learning disabilities.'
Director, NHS Trust

In the current climate of deep public spending cuts it is now more important than ever that those delivering health and social care services are equipped with tools that support them continue to deliver a high quality of care for all and ensure those that are most vulnerable do not ‘fall through the gaps’. This one day training course aims to demonstrate how human rights principles and standards can be used in practical ways to support the delivery of improved, more person-centred care and strengthen existing work on equality and diversity. It will share learning from the national project ‘Human Rights in Healthcare’, led by the Department of Health in partnership with BIHR and five NHS Trusts, which has been testing out the assumption that human rights can lead to improved standards of care since 2006.

The course will provide participants with an opportunity to:

  • Find out what human rights are, why they matter and how they relate to health and social care issues in the UK.
  • Identify how human rights relate to equality and diversity.
  • Explore the key purpose and features of the Human Rights Act.
  • Understand how human rights can be used as a practical tool to improve the design and delivery of health and social care services.
  • Hear about some examples of innovative work on human rights based approaches happening in the sector

The course is designed for individuals working in health and social care in the public and voluntary sectors. No prior knowledge of human rights is required. The course will be interactive and participative with a mix of presentations, discussions and group exercises.

Using human rights to tackle poverty

10 November 2010 - 10:00am

This one day course aims to demonstrate how human rights can be used to address issues around poverty and social exclusion in the UK context. In particular, the course will share learning from the BIHR Poverty Project, providing practical examples of how human rights are currently being used: to empower people and communities experiencing poverty; support voluntary and community sector organisations to influence public service policies and practice; and enable public sector workers to consider and apply human rights to their work.

'The training gave us a broad understanding of the human rights framework and helped us to make a positive start on applying it to current projects.’
