Human Rights and Health and Social Care

Speakers include:

  • Katie Ghose, Director, BIHR
  • Barry Mussenden, Department of Health
  • Nigel Thompson, Head of Equality and Human Rights, Care Quality Commission
  • Tod Heyda, Southwark Health and Social Care
  • Andrew Harrop, Age Concern and Help the Aged
  • Neil Crowther, Equality and Human Rights Commission

This learning event is hosted by the Department of Health and the British Institute of Human Rights as part of the Human Rights in Healthcare Project. Download the event programme.

The event aims to share best practice and learning in adopting a human rights based approach to work in the NHS and social care. The focus on social care is particularly timely given current demographic trends and policy developments in relation to the social care agenda, such as the recent Green Paper ‘Shaping the Future of Care Together’, which sets out the Government's vision for a new care and support system. The provision of social care has an important role in ensuring people’s human rights are met, and human rights laws and standards provide protection when the provision of that care falls below minimum standards.

In this context, the event will explore key questions such as: What value can a human rights based approach bring to the delivery of health and social care? How can human rights help ensure that the human being is placed at the heart of service provision? How can human rights help to join up health and social care?

The event will be interactive and participative. In addition to discussing best practice examples from across the UK we would like you to come along and share any equality and human rights work you are doing.

The event is free to attend for practitioners working in health and social care including:

  • NHS professionals
  • Local government
  • Social care service delivery and advocacy organisations
  • Representatives from health and social care professional bodies
  • Third sector organisations working on health and social care issues
  • Service user groups
  • Health and social care inspectorates and regulators

Human Rights – Tackling Poverty, Strengthening Public Services in the UK

Please join the British Institute of Human Rights and the Equality and Human Rights Commission on international human rights day for an insightful event looking at the potential of human rights to tackle poverty and strengthen public services in the UK.

This event will showcase BIHR's human rights based approach to poverty project. This pioneering programme of work - funded by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, City Parochial Foundation, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Oxfam - is supporting six London based voluntary and community sector organisations who work with and for people facing poverty or social injustice to use a human rights based approach to strengthen their voice and influence with public sector policy makers.

The three key areas of public sector provision the project is looking at are: housing & homelessness, social services and healthcare. Drawing from learning in the project, the event will provide an opportunity to discuss the issues faced by people and communities experiencing poverty in relation to these three areas. It will also look at the potential of human rights to provide solutions to these issues - supporting the development of public services and policies where fairness, respect, equality and dignity are at the core.

Lunch provided from 13.00pm – 14.00pm. The event will be followed by a drinks reception from 17.30pm.

If you would like to find out more about this event, please contact Roisin Cavanagh rcavanagh@bihr.org.uk
